Density probability distribution functions of diffuse gas in the Milky Way

چکیده
In a search for the signature of turbulence in the diffuse interstellar medium in gas density distributions, we determined the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the average volume densities of the diffuse gas. The densities were derived from dispersion measures and H I column densities towards pulsars and stars at known distances. The PDFs of the average densities of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and the diffuse atomic gas are close to lognormal, especially when lines of sight at |b| < 5◦ and |b| > 5◦ are considered separately. The PDF of 〈nH I 〉 at high |b| is twice as wide as that at low |b|. The width of the PDF of the DIG is about 30 per cent smaller than that of the warm H I at the same latitudes. The results reported here provide strong support for the existence of a lognormal density PDF in the diffuse ISM, consistent with a turbulent origin of density structure in the diffuse gas.

A continuous approximation fitting to the discrete distributions using ODE
The probability density functions fitting to the discrete probability functions has always been needed, and very important. This paper is fitting the continuous curves which are probability density functions to the binomial probability functions, negative binomial geometrics, poisson and hypergeometric. The main key in these fittings is the use of the derivative concept and common differential ...
متن کامل3D Distribution of Molecular Gas in the Barred Milky Way
We present a new model of the three-dimensional distribution of molecular gas in the Milky Way Galaxy, based on CO line data. Our analysis is based on a gas-flow simulation of the inner Galaxy using smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) using a realistic barred gravitional potential derived from the observed COBE/DIRBE near-IR light distribution. The gas model prescribes the gas orbits much bet...

In recent years, utilization of the renewable based power plants has become widespread in the power systems. One of the most widely used renewable based power plants is wind power plants. Due to the utilization of wind energy to generate electricity, wind turbines have not emitted any environmental pollution. Thus, in addition to economic benefits, utilization of these power plants is of great ...
متن کاملUnscented Auxiliary Particle Filter Implementation of the Cardinalized Probability Hypothesis Density Filters
The probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter suffers from lack of precise estimation of the expected number of targets. The Cardinalized PHD (CPHD) recursion, as a generalization of the PHD recursion, remedies this flaw and simultaneously propagates the intensity function and the posterior cardinality distribution. While there are a few new approaches to enhance the Sequential Monte Carlo (S...
متن کاملThe Origin of the Magellanic Stream
Recent measurements of the proper motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) show it to be moving in a nearly circular orbit around the Milky Way and to be leading the Magellanic Stream which stretches in a well-confined arc 100 behind it. We present numerical investigations designed to critically test models of the origin of the Magellanic Stream. The most developed model is the tidal model wh...
